FRP (also known as glass fibre reinforced plastic, internationally recognised by the abbreviation GFRP or FRP) is a variety of composite materials with a wide range of properties and uses. It is a new functional material made from synthetic resin and glass fibre through a composite process.
Advantages of FRP
(1) FRP is light and strong
The relative density is between 1.5~2.0, only 1/4~1/5 of carbon steel, but the tensile strength is close to or even exceeds that of carbon steel, and the specific strength can be compared with that of senior alloy steel. As a result, it is highly effective in aerospace, rockets, spacecraft, high pressure vessels and other applications where weight reduction is required. The tensile, flexural and compressive strengths of some epoxy FRPs can reach over 400Mpa.
(2) Good corrosion resistance of FRP
FRP is a good corrosion-resistant material, the atmosphere, water and general concentration of acid, alkali, salt, as well as a variety of oils and solvents have a good resistance. It has been applied to all aspects of chemical corrosion resistance and is replacing carbon steel, stainless steel, wood, non-ferrous metals, etc.
(3) Glass fiber reinforced plastic (FRP) good electrical properties
Is an excellent insulating material, used to manufacture insulators. Good dielectric properties can still be protected under high frequency. Microwave permeability is good, has been widely used in radar radome.
(4)FRP has good thermal performance
FRP thermal conductivity is low, 1.25~1.67kJ/(m-h-K) at room temperature, only 1/100~1/1000 of metal, is an excellent thermal insulation material. In the case of transient ultra-high temperature, it is the ideal thermal protection and ablation-resistant material, and can protect the cosmic craft to withstand the rush of high-speed airflow above 2000ºC.
